What a business website needs to generate leads

By Dinis Lima5 min read

A good-looking website that doesn't generate enquiries ends up being just another expense. Many of the problems that stop a website from generating leads can be fixed with simple changes, and they aren't always about design.

Say what you do in the first sentence

Visitors should quickly understand what you do, who you work for and, when relevant, where you work.

"Integrated services of excellence" explains nothing. "Kitchen and bathroom renovation in Porto" is much clearer.

Put that message at the top of the page and make the next step easy with a button to request a quote or get in touch.

One page per service

If the company offers three important services, it may make sense to have a dedicated page for each.

Each page can explain the service, who it's for, how it works and how to request a quote.

A clear structure helps both visitors and search engines understand the site's content.

Contact details nobody has to hunt for

  • A visible contact button, especially on mobile.
  • A tap-to-call phone number and WhatsApp, when available.
  • A short form: name, contact details and what they need.
  • Clear information about what happens after the form is sent.

The simpler the process, the fewer steps between intent and enquiry.

Proof that you do good work

Before contacting a business, many people look for signs of trust:

  • Real photos of your work.
  • Customer reviews.
  • Case studies.
  • Well-known clients, when you have permission to show them.
  • Information about the team and who is behind the company.

Built for mobile

Test your website on your own phone, including away from Wi-Fi.

Is the text easy to read? Are the buttons easy to tap? Does the content load quickly?

If the mobile experience is poor, you may be losing enquiries.

The minimum for Google

  • A unique title and description on every page.
  • Consistent information about the company.
  • A sitemap set up.
  • Google Search Console.
  • Google Business Profile, where applicable.
  • Clear pages for your main services.

None of this guarantees first place in the results. Visibility also depends on competition, authority, content, relevance and other factors.

But a well-organised technical and content structure creates a much better foundation for SEO.
