Instagram for local businesses: what to post every week

By Eduardo Romeira5 min read

For a local business, Instagram works as a shop window and as a way to show the business is active. Before calling or walking in, many people look the business up online to understand what it does and how it works. You don't need to post every day. It's more important to regularly show things only your business can show.

Three types of post, in rotation

A simple way to avoid running out of ideas is to rotate between three types of content:

  • Product or service: the dish of the day, the car that just arrived, the finished job. With price or terms when it makes sense.
  • Behind the scenes: the preparation, the team and the before and after.
  • Proof: a customer review, a common question answered or a concrete result.

Reels, carousels and stories

Reels can help you reach people who don't follow the account yet, especially when the content is made for discovery.

Short vertical videos, with the key information in the first seconds and on-screen text, help get the message across quickly.

Carousels are for explaining: five photos of a job, the steps of a service or the most common questions.

Stories suit day-to-day updates and quick news. Save the most useful ones as highlights, such as opening hours, services, reviews and location.

How often?

Three feed posts a week and stories on most days is a pace many businesses can keep up.

Not disappearing for weeks matters more than posting a lot.

Your profile has to close the sale

Anyone landing on your profile should quickly understand what you do and how to reach you:

  • Name and category: state the service clearly and, when relevant, the area you cover.
  • Bio: one sentence about the service and a call to action.
  • Contact buttons: phone, email, directions and WhatsApp.
  • Link: your website or a page with your main contact details.
  • Location: if you have physical premises, tag the location on relevant posts.

Your own photos, not stock

Stock images can feel generic and don't show your business.

A real photo with good light can say much more.

If you don't have material yet, a well-planned session at your premises can produce enough content for several weeks.

Measure what matters

Followers and likes help you gauge engagement, but they aren't the only indicator.

Once a month, look at:

  • Reel views and reach among people who don't follow the account yet.
  • Taps on the contact buttons and profile links.
  • Direct messages asking for information or bookings.
  • The posts behind those enquiries.

Repeat the formats that work and adjust the ones that aren't bringing results.
